What Is E-Paper? How Electronic Paper Display Technology Works

An E-Paper display (Electronic Paper Display, or EPD) is a reflective display technology that mimics the appearance of ink on paper. Unlike LCD or OLED screens, E-Paper uses no backlight — it reflects ambient light, meaning the brighter the environment, the more readable the display. E-Paper consumes power only when updating the image. Once a static image is set, the display holds it indefinitely with zero power draw — a property called bistability.

E-Paper uses electrophoretic technology: microscopic charged pigment particles suspended in fluid microcapsules are moved by an applied electric field to create black, white, or color pixels. The result is a display that looks like printed ink, is fully readable in direct sunlight, consumes microamps in standby, and can run for months or years on a small battery.
